Jinky's in Agoura Hills

The 1992 establishment has expanded!

By: Steve Tipp

Jinky’s Coffee shop is known for it’s creative recipes and quality cuisine. The American, Southwest style recipes make things much more interesting than just the typical bacon and eggs. All their locations contain full coffee bars and outside patios for the warm LA mornings. They make fabulous cappucinos and banana nut pancakes. Their most recent project is Agoura Hills next to the new Trader Joes.

Stop by 28941 Canwood St. at “The Shops” at Oak Creek shopping center – just north of
the 101. You’ll be able to see it as you exit the freeway at Kanan Road.

Take Down The Rope

Utilizing Your Living Room

By: Sheri Karp

Share/Bookmark

The Living Room is not obsolete; it has just changed into a more relaxed
atmosphere. No longer is it the roped off area, soley designated for company.
No longer is it looked at but not touched. Bring it into 2010
and unwrap the furniture. The new way to enjoy your living room is to add a
T.V. to the room and the room will finally be used. No longer do we have a
big, awkward T.V but a slim flat screen, barely noticeable to be enjoyed
in your new room.  Some flat screens double as mirrors or art when not in
use.

The family room is where the toys, kids, the Wii and games remain but the
living room is where the adults can quietly watch their programs….finally!
If you are considering redecorating, try something more casual.
You may even want to put a small desk in there to put your laptop on as well….
come on, be daring, enjoy the room.

The Journey's Program

…is offering a new program for the PRE-kindergartners. This is for our pre Willow and Yerba Buena children. It is for the children that are on the age cusp for kindergarten, a bit too young for kindergarten and a bit too old for pre-school, they turn 5 between July 1-Dec.1st. Sumac and Lupin Hill had the program last year and it has now been added to White Oak Elementary in Westlake.

It is scheduled from 8:00-1:00 M-F and they are preparing them for kindergarten rather than another year of pre-school. Last year was the first year and the parents are raving about the program. After a year in the Journey’s program, most students will enter traditional Kindergarten although some may be eligible for 1st grade. It is open to all Las Virgenes families. It is just another way our schools are working to better the education program. Hats off to
Las Virgenes Schools.

Peter H. Brothers Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men

The first English print book inspired by Ishirō Hondamushroom clouds and mushroom men

Agoura Hills author Peter H. Brothers recently wrote the first English printed book on the fantasy film “Godzilla, King of Monsters.” The book, “Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men,” took roughly 3 years to write and 2 years to get published.

Brothers fascination with Honda’s films dates back about 50 years to his childhood in Encino which he calls the golden age of sci-fyi. He since studied specific techniques used by Honda in order to write this novel. Brothers book details the humanity behind the Honda’s series. Brett Homenick, a colleague of Brothers from G-Fan magazine, explained that the novel helps readers truly understand Mr. Honda’s approach to Godzilla.

Homenick went on to say, “His films touched the lives of children all over the world, breaking down cultural barriers, bringing Japanese films into the homes of youngsters who otherwise would have had no interest in learning about Japan.”

Urbane Cafe in Agoura Hills

For gourmet sandwiches, salads and catering

Urbane: polite, refined, sophisticated and courteous

If there is one word to describe the service at Urbane Cafe it’s efficient. With a brief glance into the kitchen you’ll quickly notice the well defined stations that enlist each employee to a designated task. Whether it’s rolling out dough to be cooked in the wood fire grill, seasoning the salad, flipping chicken or putting sandwiches together as high speeds, Urbane cafe knows how to handle the crowds. Good thing, because it’s packed.

Possessing the feeling of classic California fresh cuisine, Urbane offers surprisingly tasty choices under $7. The prices would seem to suggest a lower quality of food but in fact, the recipes are seasoned properly and offer a fusion of Italian and southwest flavors. This fresh new spot in Agoura Hills is just north of the new Trader Joes and south of the McDonalds. A perfect lunch spot for a tast, healthy and relatively inexpensive meal.

This Agoura Hills company specializes in manufacturing custom artificial trees. Although it may sound strange, Make Be-Leaves is a strong business that sells artificial trees, palm trees, silk plants, silk floral arrangements and plantscapes for commercial interior use. This national preferred supplier for hotels and restaurants is headed by founder, Susie Ameche. Ameche started her business from her own home and slowly expanded into an Agoura Hills office. The small business is increasingly popular as commercial interior designers opt for low maintenance, green options.

Local Baseball Talent in the Minors

Agoura & Calabasas graduates playing in a Mid West Leaguerobertstock

Pitcher Robert Stock of Agoura High and catcher Chris Notti of Calabasas high are rising in the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization. The two play for the Quad Cities River Bandits alongside former Agoura Hills teammate Jason Novak. Coincidentally, many other local sensations play in the Midwest League, a Single-A minor league with teams across the heartland.

Matt Magill of Royal, Cutter Dykstra of Westlake, Mike Gilmartin of Moorpark and Corey Jones of Camarillo all play in the same league. But, despite all the talent, Stock is considered one of the finest prospects in the St. Louis Cardinals’ farm system.

Novak and Stock used to play for the Agoura Chargers together and later competed against each other in college. Novak pitched for UCLA and Stock caught for USC. Last year they were roomies for the Johnson City Cardinals in Tennessee and now they live in the same apartment complex in Iowa.

As our local talent continues to play at a higher level, they all hope to play until they physically can’t play anymore. Notti explains, “There’s no timeline. You play until you can’t play anymore.”

We wish our fine local boys good health in the future!
